Bathrooms are small rooms with a high density of trades. Framing, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile, cabinetry and ventilation all meet inside a few square metres, and the order they happen in decides whether the room lasts fifteen years or starts failing at the shower curb after three.

What we build
Bathroom work in the HRM tends to fall into a few recognisable projects, and we take on all of them:
- Full gut renovations. Everything out to the studs and subfloor, then rebuilt with new plumbing, wiring, waterproofing, tile and fixtures.
- Tub to shower conversions. Replacing an unused tub with a curbless or low-curb walk-in shower, often for aging in place.
- Ensuite renovations. Double vanities, separate shower and tub, heated floors and better lighting in the primary bathroom.
- Basement and secondary bathrooms. Adding a three piece bath downstairs, including drainage below slab where the layout requires it.
- Powder rooms. Small footprint, quick turnaround, usually vanity, toilet, lighting, tile and paint.
- Accessibility upgrades. Grab bar blocking, wider door openings, comfort height fixtures and level entry showers.
Waterproofing and Maritime moisture
Nova Scotia bathrooms deal with humidity that lingers. Cold exterior walls, long heating seasons and salt air combine to make ventilation and waterproofing the two details that decide the lifespan of the room, so we treat them as structural rather than optional.
Shower walls and floors get a bonded waterproof membrane over properly fastened backer board, with corners, curbs and penetrations detailed before any tile goes on. Fans are sized to the room volume and vented outside through insulated duct, never into an attic or soffit cavity. Where an exterior wall is involved, we check the insulation and vapour control while the wall is open, because that is the only chance to fix it without demolition.
The waterproofing layer is the part of a bathroom nobody sees and the part that decides whether the renovation still looks good in a decade.
Bathroom renovation scopes and timelines
Bathroom size affects cost less than people expect. Fixture count, tile area, whether drains move and the finish level do most of the work. A small ensuite with a fully tiled shower and a relocated toilet can cost more than a larger bathroom that keeps its plumbing where it is.

Living with the work
If the bathroom being renovated is the only full bath in the house, tell us at the estimate. We sequence the plumbing so the toilet is out of service for the shortest practical window, and we can often keep it usable overnight during the rough-in stage. For a single bathroom home, most clients arrange a few days elsewhere during demolition and rough plumbing, then move back in for the finishing weeks.
Work areas are sheeted off, floors protected along the route in and out, and the site swept at the end of each day.

How long is a bathroom out of service during a renovation?
A refresh that keeps the plumbing in place is usually one to two weeks. A full gut runs three to four weeks, with the room unusable for most of it. We give you the specific dates with the quote so you can plan, and we tell you early if anything shifts.
Can you build a curbless or walk-in shower?
Yes. A curbless shower needs the floor structure recessed or built up to create the slope, so it is easier on a subfloor we can access from below or on a slab. We assess what your floor allows during the estimate and give you the options along with what each one involves.
Do you install heated bathroom floors?
Yes. Electric in-floor heating mats go under tile and run on a dedicated circuit with a floor sensing thermostat. It is worth deciding at quote stage, because adding it later means lifting the tile you just paid for.
Will you replace the exhaust fan?
Almost always. Undersized or unvented fans are the most common cause of the mildew and peeling paint we find during bathroom demolition in the HRM. We size the fan for the room and vent it outside through insulated duct.
