Deck Builders in Halifax and the HRM

A deck in Nova Scotia takes weather that most of the country does not see. Freeze and thaw cycles work at footings, salt air corrodes fasteners and hardware, wind-driven rain finds every unsealed end grain, and snow load sits on the frame for months. Deck framing built to the minimum will hold up for a while, then start to move.

How we build for Nova Scotia weather

The details below are standard on our deck builds rather than upgrades, because they cost little at build time and a great deal to correct later.

• Footings below frost. Sized and set below the local frost line so the frame does not lift and settle each winter.
• Corrosion rated hardware. Hot dip galvanized or stainless fasteners, hangers and post bases, which matters most on coastal properties in Cole Harbour and Eastern Passage.
• Flashed ledger connections. Where the deck attaches to the house, the ledger is flashed and fastened properly so water is directed out rather than into the rim joist.
• Joist protection tape. Applied over the top of joists and beams so water sitting between board and frame does not rot the structure from the top down.
• Drainage gaps and slope. Spacing and pitch that shed water and let the frame dry between rains.
• Railings engineered for load. Posts through-bolted or blocked, not surface screwed, so the guard holds when someone leans on it.

Cedar or composite

Both work well here and the right answer depends on how you want to spend your time. Cedar is warmer underfoot, costs less up front, works easily around curves and inset details, and needs cleaning and re-oiling every year or two to keep its colour. Left alone it weathers to grey, which some homeowners want on purpose.

Composite decking costs more at install and asks for very little afterward beyond washing. It does not check or splinter, holds colour under Maritime UV, and suits properties near the water where maintenance access is awkward. On shaded, damp lots in places like Timberlea, composite avoids the yearly moss and mildew problem that untreated wood invites.

Outdoor living beyond the deck

Permits and property lines

Most decks over a certain height above grade require a building permit from Halifax Regional Municipality, and setback rules govern how close the structure can sit to a property line. Attached decks also have requirements around the ledger connection and guard height.
