Kitchen Renovations in Halifax

We renovate kitchens across Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and the wider HRM, from a cabinet and counter refresh through to moving walls and rebuilding the room around how you actually cook.

Finished white shaker kitchen renovation in a Halifax home

A kitchen renovation is the project Halifax homeowners ask us about more than any other, and it is also the one where planning earns the most. Cabinet lead times, appliance dimensions, plumbing locations and electrical capacity all have to line up before demolition starts, because a decision made in week one shows up in the finished room in week eight.

Nova Core Construction handles the whole build, so you are speaking with one contractor rather than coordinating a cabinet supplier, a plumber, an electrician and a tiler yourself. We measure the room, draw the layout, price the finishes you choose and put the numbers in writing before anyone picks up a hammer.

What a kitchen renovation includes

Every kitchen is priced from its own scope, though most of the projects we build across the HRM cover the same set of trades. A typical renovation runs through:

  • Design and layout. Working out where the sink, range, fridge and prep space sit so the room works for the way your household cooks and eats.
  • Demolition and disposal. Old cabinets, counters, flooring and backsplash removed, with the site dust-protected and debris hauled away.
  • Cabinetry. Custom or supplier cabinets set level and plumb, scribed to walls that are rarely square in older Halifax homes.
  • Countertops. Quartz, granite or laminate templated after the boxes are installed so the fit is measured from reality rather than a drawing.
  • Plumbing and electrical. Sink, dishwasher and range connections, plus circuits, under-cabinet lighting and outlets brought up to current code.
  • Flooring, tile and paint. Backsplash, floor covering, trim and finish paint completed in the right order so nothing gets damaged twice.

If your project is a partial renovation, say new counters and a backsplash over existing cabinets, we quote only that work. There is no requirement to take the whole room down to the studs.

Kitchen renovation cost in Halifax

The honest answer is that cost tracks three things: the size of the room, whether services move, and the finishes you select. Relocating a sink to an island means new drain and supply lines under the floor, which is a different project from replacing a sink in place. Rather than publish a single number that will be wrong for your house, we quote line by line after seeing the space.

The tiers below describe the scopes we are most often asked to price in the HRM. They set expectations for what is involved, not a price list.

Common kitchen scopes we quote for Halifax and HRM homeowners.
ScopeWhat it coversTypical build time
Surface refreshNew counters, backsplash, sink, taps and paint over sound existing cabinetry1 to 2 weeks
Full replacementNew cabinets, counters, flooring, lighting and appliances in the existing layout3 to 5 weeks
Layout changeWalls or services relocated, island added, structural work and permits as required6 to 10 weeks

Working in older Halifax housing stock

Peninsula homes and older Dartmouth bungalows come with conditions that a quote written from a floor plan will miss. Plaster and lath behind the cabinets, floors that fall an inch across the room, knob and tube wiring in the ceiling above, and studs at irregular spacing are all common. We open a small inspection point during the estimate wherever we can, so the surprises turn up while the quote is being written instead of three weeks in.

Where an older kitchen needs the electrical panel upgraded or a vent run rerouted, we tell you at quote stage and price it as a separate line. You can then decide whether to include it, defer it, or adjust finishes elsewhere to balance the budget.

How the build runs

  1. Site visit and measure

We walk the kitchen with you, take dimensions, check what is behind the walls where possible, and talk through how you use the room day to day.

  2. Layout and finish selection

You see a layout and a materials list. Cabinet door style, counter material, hardware, flooring and lighting are all chosen before we order, because changes after ordering cost time.

  3. Written quote

An itemized quote with a start window and a build duration. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

  4. Demolition and rough-in

The old kitchen comes out, then plumbing, electrical and any framing changes go in and get inspected where a permit applies.

  5. Install and finish

Cabinets, counters, tile, flooring, trim and paint, in that order. We walk the finished room with you and complete any punch list items before final payment.

Kitchen Renovations questions we get asked

Can I use my kitchen during the renovation?

For most of the build, no. We usually set up a temporary station with the fridge, kettle and microwave in an adjacent room so the household keeps functioning, and we give you the dates the sink and range will be out of service before work starts so you can plan around them.

Do you supply cabinets or do I buy my own?

Either works. We can supply and install cabinetry, or install units you have already purchased. If you are supplying them, tell us at quote stage so we can check the sizes against the room and flag anything that will not fit before the order goes in.

Does a kitchen renovation need a building permit in Halifax?

Replacing cabinets, counters and flooring in the same layout generally does not. Moving or removing a wall, altering the structure, or adding new circuits and plumbing lines usually does require a permit from Halifax Regional Municipality. We confirm what applies to your project during the quote and handle the application when one is needed.

How far ahead should I book a kitchen renovation?

Cabinet lead times drive the schedule more than our calendar does, and they commonly run several weeks from order to delivery. Booking the estimate two to three months before you want the work to start gives room for selections, ordering and a sensible start date.
